Although the Duke of Edinburgh's Award in West Norfolk concentrates mainly on the Gold Award, there are two other levels - Bronze and Silver - as well.

More and more schools in the area are offering pupils an opportunity to undertake the Bronze Award and Sliver Award. However, it is quite possible to go straight for Gold as a direct entrant, without having either a Bronze or Silver Award.

So what does it involve?

Each of the levels contains the same four sections: Volunteering, Physical, SkillsResidential and an Expedition of some sort. The higher the level, the greater the length of the commitment required.

For the Gold Award, activities chosen for the Volunteering section must be carried out for at least twelve months, while for the Skills and Physical one must be undertaken over at least six months and the other for at least twelve months, but you can choose which to do for which length of time.

Direct entrants (anyone who has not achieved a Silver Award) must undertake a further six months in either the Volunteering (Service) or the longer of the Skills or Physical section. This means that direct entrants do one section for six months, one for 12 and one for 18 months. For the Gold Award there is an extra section: the Residential project.
